Two dryer vents can sit in two houses on the same street and behave completely differently. The one that clogs first is almost always the longer one. Duct length is the single biggest variable in how fast lint builds up, and it is the one homeowners almost never think about — because the duct is hidden in a ceiling or a wall the day the house is finished, and nobody looks at it again.
Why length decides how fast a vent clogs
A dryer pushes air with a small blower, and that blower has a fixed amount of push. The longer the duct, the more of that push gets used up on friction before the air reaches the outside. Slower air carries less lint. Lint that is not carried out settles — usually right after the first elbow, where the air changes direction and loses speed.
The residential mechanical code puts the ceiling at 35 feet of developed length for a typical installation, and bends count heavily against that total: about 2.5 feet for a 45-degree elbow and 5 feet for a 90. That is the part that surprises people. A 20-foot duct with four 90-degree turns has a developed length of roughly 40 feet, which is over the limit even though a tape measure across the basement reads 20.
The homes where this shows up
Second-floor laundry rooms are the usual culprit, along with laundry closets placed in the center of a floor plan rather than on an exterior wall. Both designs force the duct to travel horizontally before it can get outside, and horizontal travel means elbows. We see this constantly in newer subdivisions across Romeoville and the surrounding Will County neighborhoods, where upstairs laundry is a standard feature rather than an upgrade [Observed].
Signs your long run is already restricted
The first symptom is almost never lint — it is time. A load that used to finish in one cycle starts needing two. Then the dryer cabinet runs hot, the laundry room feels humid, and the exterior flap stops opening all the way when the machine is running. Go outside mid-cycle and put your hand near the hood. If you feel a weak trickle instead of a steady push of warm air, the duct is holding lint.
Where booster fans fit — and where they do not
A listed dryer booster fan adds mechanical push to a run that is longer than a dryer can handle alone. On a genuinely over-length duct that cannot be rerouted, it is a legitimate fix. What it is not is a substitute for cleaning. A booster fan installed over a duct packed with lint just moves the restriction downstream and gives the homeowner a false sense that the problem is handled. The fan itself also collects lint and needs periodic service.
The other thing worth checking is material. Flexible foil and plastic duct belong nowhere in a concealed run — the ridges catch lint, the duct sags between supports, and it crushes flat behind the machine. Rigid metal duct with joints pointed in the direction of airflow is the correct build.
What a long-run cleaning involves
We brush the full developed length rather than reaching in from both ends and calling it done, because the packed section on a long run is usually in the middle where nobody can reach it. We clear the exterior hood and flap, check the material and the supports along any accessible section, reconnect the dryer properly, and confirm real airflow at the termination before we pack up. Can I use flexible foil duct on a long run?

Humid late-August air holds moisture against lint that is already sitting in the duct. Damp lint packs down instead of blowing out, so a duct that was passable in spring can be noticeably restricted by the end of the summer.
